Dr. Steven J. Steinberg is the Geographic Information Officer (GIO) for Los Angeles County California. As GIO he guides the geospatial strategy for a County of over 10 million residents and 100,000 county employees, in collaboration with a team of highly skilled GIS professionals.

Since 2020, he has been actively engaged in graduate teaching as an adjunct professor with the Master of Science in Geographic Information Science (MS GISci) program at the California State University, Long Beach.

He is co-author/editor of: Resilient Communities across Geographies (2021), GIS Research Methods: Incorporating Spatial Perspectives(2015), and GIS for the Social Sciences: Investigating Space and Place (2006) with Dr. Sheila Lakshmi Steinberg and author or co-author of numerous book chapters, journal articles, conference proceedings and technical reports.

From 2011-2018 Dr. Steinberg, served as a Principal Scientist and Department Head for Information Management and Analysis at the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (SCCWRP) a Public Agency for Environmental Research located in Costa Mesa, California with a research focus on areas of data collection, analysis and visualization.

Prior to joining SCCWRP, Dr. Steinberg served as a Professor of Geospatial Sciences in Cal Poly Humboldt's Department of Environmental Science and Management (1998-2011) teaching a variety of geospatial courses, conducting research and supervising 18 graduate students and serving on numerous graduate student committees.

In 2004, Dr. Steinberg was selected as a Fulbright Scholar and appointed as Distinguished Chair of Airborne Remote Sensing at the Centre for Scientific Computing, Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In 2005 he was honored with Humboldt State University's Alistair McCrone Promising Faculty Scholar award. In the fall of 2008 Dr. Steinberg was invited to teach at the University of Helsinki, Finland, as a Fulbright Senior Scholar in the International Master's Degree Programme in Geoinformatics (GIMP). Dr. Steinberg is a lifetime member of the Fulbright Association and continues to serve as a Fulbright Scholar Program Peer Reviewer.

Dr. Steinberg's Ph.D. work emphasized the introduction and adoption of Internet-based GIS mapping tools in Department of Natural Resource agency offices throughout the State of Minnesota. He has researched and presented extensively on the application of geospatial analysis technologies for modelling and visualization in both human and natural environments.
